Baker Police Department Launches Achievers Academy for After-School Tutoring Program
Chief Dunn launched the initiative in May 2023 to help students build a foundation for success, with a strong emphasis on reading and academic achievement. The program is open to all students across East Baton Rouge Parish and is completely free for families.
BAKER, La. — Baker Police Chief Carl Dunn and his department are set to kick off the first day of their after-school tutoring program tomorrow, known as the Achievers Academy. Aimed at providing academic support to students in kindergarten through eighth grade, the program runs every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. throughout the school year.

"Reading is so fundamental and opens so many doors," Dunn said. "We want to produce productive, positive, and confident children. Any success I've experienced, I owe it to my love for reading. I want to see every child achieve even more than I have in my lifetime."
Achievers Academy provides not only tutoring but also a safe and encouraging environment for students. The program has about 10 volunteers, who assist with homework, teach advanced reading skills, and help provide meals. The goal is for each student to be reading at least two grade levels above their current age by the end of the program.
Dunn has observed a remarkable shift in the students’ confidence and self-perception. "I've noticed a difference in their walk and their speech. Their confidence level has skyrocketed just by improving their reading skills," Dunn shared. "Instead of shying away when asked to read in class, they’re eager to raise their hands."
The chief, who has been in law enforcement since 1983, sees the academy as a way to positively impact the community while fostering a sense of responsibility in the next generation. "We signed up to be community helpers, and that's what we’re doing every day, with a smile on our face," Dunn said.
The Achievers Academy will begin its after-school program on Tuesday, August 27. The Baker Police Department is also accepting donations of books, school supplies, and snacks to support the students in the program.
