Baton Rouge, La. — Baton Rouge is set to experience a dramatic weather shift this weekend, with severe thunderstorms and below-freezing temperatures in the forecast, according to the National Weather Service.

A powerful squall line, moving ahead of an incoming cold front, will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to the region on Sunday. The storm is expected to last from the afternoon into midnight, with wind gusts reaching 25 to 30 mph, said NWS meteorologist Danielle Manning.

"Sunday afternoon and evening will be marked by strong winds and the potential for damaging gusts as the cold front approaches," Manning said. "By Sunday night, temperatures will plummet dramatically as Arctic air moves in."

Although Baton Rouge will see a warm high of 75 degrees on Sunday, temperatures will drop quickly after sunset, with a low of 33 degrees expected early Monday morning. The coldest air will settle in Monday night, with freezing temperatures expected to persist through Wednesday night.

Daytime highs from Monday through Wednesday will struggle to reach the mid-40s, with nighttime lows dipping to around 29 degrees, bringing the risk of frost to the area.

"The cold weather will linger, and temperatures could dip below freezing each night," Manning warned, urging residents to take precautions. "Make sure to protect your family, pets, pipes, and plants during this cold stretch."

As the region faces a stark contrast in weather, Baton Rouge residents should prepare for a mix of stormy conditions and bitterly cold temperatures over the next few days.
