This iconic clash between the Southern University Jaguars and the Grambling State University Tigers isn’t just about football—it’s a week-long celebration of history, pride, and community that transcends the gridiron.
Often referred to as the "Granddaddy" of HBCU matchups, the Bayou Classic has become a beacon for alumni, students, and fans nationwide. Each November, the Crescent City becomes the epicenter of festivities that honor the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, drawing tens of thousands of attendees to soak in the unique blend of culture and camaraderie.
This year’s main event, the highly anticipated football game, kicks off Saturday, November 30, at 1 p.m. in the Caesars Superdome. Southern University, serving as the home team, will occupy the stadium's west side, while Grambling State fans will cheer their Tigers from the east.
The Bayou Classic, however, is more than just a game—it’s a week of traditions and events that highlight the vibrant culture of these two storied institutions.
A Week Full of Excitement
The Bayou Classic festivities began Monday with the Welcome Press Conference, signaling the official start of the week’s events. But the energy ramps up heading into Thanksgiving weekend with activities designed for families, alumni, and fans alike.
On Thanksgiving Day, the streets of downtown New Orleans will host the annual Bayou Classic Parade, beginning at 3 p.m. Featuring elaborate floats, marching bands, and spirited crowds, the parade is a beloved tradition for locals and visitors.
Friday delivers a packed schedule, starting with “Business at Bayou Classic,” a Black small business showcase held at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event, free and open to the public, spotlights entrepreneurial excellence within the community.
Later that evening, fans will gather at the Caesars Superdome for the Battle of the Bands and Greek Show. This high-energy competition pits Southern University’s renowned “Human Jukebox” against Grambling State’s legendary Tiger Marching Band. The show also features the third annual Bayou Classic Invitational High School Battle of the Bands, giving younger musicians a chance to shine. Doors open at 5 p.m., with performances starting at 6 p.m.
For night owls, the Bayou Classic After Party kicks off at 11 p.m. at the Metropolitan Nightclub, extending Friday night’s excitement into the early hours of Saturday.
Game Day Brings Fans Together
Saturday morning begins with the Doc Griggs “Two Times Around the Dome” Family Fitness Fun Walk at 8 a.m., a health-focused tradition that encourages fans to stay active. Shortly afterward, the Special Olympics Unified Rivalry Flag Football Game will take place at 9 a.m. at St. Augustine Practice Field.
As game time approaches, Champions Square will come alive with the Bayou Classic Fan Festival. From 9 a.m. to noon, visitors can enjoy live music, food, and interactive exhibits. The “Embrace the Culture” stage will host performances presented by the City of New Orleans and other local organizations.
