Baton Rouge, La. —Baton Rouge city officials are issuing urgent warnings and detailed guidance ahead of a winter storm predicted to bring unprecedented weather conditions to the region. Mayor-President Sid Edwards, alongside leaders from public safety, transportation, and emergency response teams, announced a comprehensive plan aimed at protecting residents during what could be a record-breaking event.

“This weather event has the potential to be one of the most impactful we've experienced in recent years,” said Mayor-President Edwards. “We are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of our residents, but we need the community to take these warnings seriously and prepare now.”

Warming Centers and Emergency Shelters Open to Residents

To ensure the safety of vulnerable populations, multiple warming centers and shelters will open on Monday afternoon. These facilities will provide relief from freezing conditions and accommodate individuals and families who need a safe, warm place to stay:

  • Jewel J. Newman Community Center: 20113 Central Rd. | Phone: (225) 775-3935
  • Charles R. Kelly Community Center: 3535 Riley St. | Phone: (225) 389-5464
  • Leo S. Butler Community Center: 950 E. Washington St. | Phone: (225) 389-4860
  • Salvation Army: 7361 Airline Hwy. | Phone: (225) 355-4483
  • St. Vincent de Paul: 220 St. Vincent de Paul Dr. | Phone: (225) 383-7837

Additionally, the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library (7711 Goodwood Blvd.) will serve as a temporary warming center between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily.

Coordinated Transportation and Road Safety Efforts

Local law enforcement, in coordination with the Capital Area Transit System (CATS), will ensure residents have access to shelters and emergency resources. CATS will operate on a modified holiday schedule and provide free rides to warming centers for those without transportation.

"Our officers will be out in full force, monitoring road conditions, assisting with shelter transports, and enforcing closures to ensure public safety," said Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul. “We urge residents to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary, especially as freezing rain and snow make roadways hazardous.”

For transportation assistance, residents can call the Baton Rouge Police Department non-emergency line at (225) 389-2000 or contact CATS Customer Care at (225) 389-8282.

Severe Weather Outlook and Precautions

State Climatologist Jay Grimes emphasized that the storm is expected to bring significant challenges beyond just snowfall:

  • Prolonged Freezing Conditions: Temperatures are forecasted to remain below freezing for over 60 consecutive hours, posing a significant risk to infrastructure, pipes, vegetation, and home heating systems.
  • Snowfall Totals: Accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are predicted for much of Baton Rouge, with localized areas potentially seeing higher amounts.
  • Travel Disruptions: Freezing rain and icy conditions will likely make travel impossible starting Monday night and continuing through midweek.

“This isn’t just a snowfall event,” said Grimes. “The extended freeze amplifies the risks, from power outages to property damage.”

Fire Safety and Emergency Equipment Use

Baton Rouge Fire Chief Michael Kimble highlighted key fire safety concerns, particularly the risks associated with home heating:

  • Residents should never use open flames or ovens to heat their homes, as this significantly increases the risk of house fires.
  • If using space heaters, ensure they are placed at least three feet away from flammable materials and are turned off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Generator Safety: Generators must be placed outdoors and away from windows to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

“If you don’t have a working smoke detector, please contact the fire department immediately,” Chief Kimble added. “We will provide and install one at no cost.” Residents can call the Baton Rouge Fire Department at (225) 354-1400 to request smoke detectors or other fire safety assistance.

Preparedness Checklist for Residents

City officials are urging every household to take the following steps to prepare for the storm:

  • Insulate Pipes: Cover exposed pipes to prevent freezing and bursting during the prolonged freeze.
  • Stock Supplies: Ensure you have enough food, water, and medicine to last at least five days.
  • Drip Faucets: Keep a small stream of water flowing to prevent pipe freezing.
  • Protect Pets: Bring pets indoors and provide adequate bedding and warmth.
  • Emergency Contacts: Save essential phone numbers, including 2-1-1 for non-emergencies and 9-1-1 for emergencies.

Community Resources and Assistance

To assist residents in staying informed, the city has activated its emergency response communication channels, including Red Stick Ready, which offers real-time updates and alerts on weather events and emergency services. For non-emergency assistance or additional information on shelters and warming centers, residents can call 2-1-1.

Mayor-President Edwards concluded the briefing with a firm message: “We have mobilized every available resource to respond to this storm, but the success of our efforts depends on everyone doing their part.
