ATLANTA – Jackson State's relentless defense stole the show in the 2024 Cricket Celebration Bowl, leading the Tigers to a decisive 28-7 victory over South Carolina State. The win delivered Jackson State its fourth national championship and its first under head coach T.C. Taylor, a proud alumnus in his second season.
The Tigers’ defensive unit suffocated the MEAC champion Bulldogs, allowing just 16 rushing yards on 18 attempts and forcing five three-and-outs. Key plays from linebacker Shemar Hawkins, who tallied six tackles and an interception, anchored a defensive effort that set the tone for the game.
“The defense came to play, and they made all the difference,” Coach Taylor said. “We wanted to dominate every phase, and the defense made that goal a reality.”
On the offensive side, quarterback Jacobian Morgan efficiently managed the game, throwing for 219 yards and a touchdown. His performance earned him Offensive MVP honors. Wide receiver Joanes Fortilien hauled in a 4-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to put Jackson State on the board, while running back Irv Mulligan rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns to extend the Tigers’ lead.
South Carolina State's only score came early in the fourth quarter, but Jackson State responded with a quick strike from Morgan to Fortilien, sealing the win.
The Tigers dominated the stat sheet, outgaining the Bulldogs 367-135 in total yards, including a 148-16 advantage on the ground. Jeremiah Williams, named Defensive MVP, praised the team’s preparation and discipline. “We trusted the game plan, and everyone executed their role,” Williams said.
