Former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a global humanitarian icon, passed away Sunday at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia.

The Carter Center announced his death, stating, "Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family." No cause of death was immediately disclosed.

Carter’s passing comes nearly a year after he entered hospice care in February 2023, following a series of brief hospital stays. Opting to spend his final days at home with family, the former president’s decision reflected his characteristic humility and deep commitment to loved ones.

A Life of Public Service

Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981, navigating the nation through challenges including economic struggles, energy crises, and the Iran hostage situation. Prior to his presidency, he built a distinguished career in public service as a Georgia state senator (1963–1967) and governor of Georgia (1971–1975).

Following his term in office, Carter redefined the role of a former president. His post-presidential work championed peace, democracy, and humanitarian efforts globally through The Carter Center, which he and his wife Rosalynn Carter founded in 1982. Carter’s wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, preceded him in death on November 19, 2023. The couple’s enduring partnership and shared commitment to public service were celebrated by many, including during one of their final public appearances together at the Plains Peanut Festival in September 2023.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise expressed his condolences, saluting Carter’s lifetime of service. "From his time as a naval officer to his tenure as president, and through his remarkable post-presidential work, Jimmy Carter set the standard for servant leadership," Scalise stated.

Senator Jon Ossoff, representing Carter’s home state of Georgia, highlighted Carter’s global contributions. "President Carter will forever be remembered for his commitment to democracy, human rights, and philanthropy," Ossoff said.
