Louisiana leaders sound the alarm: Vaccinate now to prevent deadly Measles outbreak
The San Antonio measles outbreak has experts warning it could spread quickly along the I-10 corridor, threatening cities like Lake Charles, Lafayette, and Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE, LA — In the wake of a tragic measles-related death in Texas, Louisiana’s top lawmakers are issuing a powerful and urgent call to action: Get vaccinated before it’s too late.
President Pro Tempore Senator Regina Barrow, Representative C. Denise Marcelle and Representative Barbara W. Carpenter are standing united to prevent the kind of loss that devastated a Texas family from striking here at home.
“This is not a drill. A child is dead from a disease we know how to prevent,” said Senator Barrow. “We cannot afford to gamble with the lives of our children. Vaccination is not a suggestion—it’s a responsibility.”
The outbreak, which has now reached San Antonio, has public health experts warning that measles could move swiftly along the I-10 corridor, putting Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and other Louisiana cities at direct risk.
There are no confirmed cases in Louisiana—yet. But that window is closing.
Despite shifts in state public health policy, MMR vaccines remain available at parish health units, and local leaders are stepping into the void left by diminished statewide outreach. They say trusted community voices must lead when lives are on the line.
“We see you. We serve you. And we’re not staying silent,” said Rep. C. Denise Marcelle. “Our children deserve the truth, not confusion. Vaccines work. Vaccines save lives.”
Rep. Barbara Carpenter added,
“This is about legacy and leadership. Know your immunization status. Ask your doctor. Get your family protected. And if you haven’t been vaccinated, go—today.”
With immunization rates slipping and dangerous misinformation spreading online, Louisiana’s most respected voices are stepping up to deliver what the community needs: facts, focus, and fierce protection.
