Baton Rouge, LA - Baton Rouge witnessed the grand opening of the Amazon Fulfillment Center at the former Cortana Mall site, marking a significant milestone in the revitalization of one of the city’s key corridors. The $200 million, 3.4 million square foot facility, strategically located at the intersection of Airline Highway and Florida Boulevard, underscores Baton Rouge's dedication to economic development and job creation.

"I remember when this journey began at Washington Mardi Gras more than four years ago," reminisced Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome. "Bringing Amazon to Baton Rouge required leadership and collaboration from all of us. I was proud to contribute by approving local incentives that worked in tandem with our state partners, the Metropolitan Council, BRAC, and the Capital Area Finance Authority. As a result, Baton Rouge gained a $200 million investment in this facility and over 1,000 new local jobs, contributing more than $36 million in annual payroll for our residents."

The Amazon facility is already playing a crucial role in revitalizing a key area of the community, fostering prosperity through the Cortana Economic Development District and the Florida Corridor Master Plan. The facility has spurred significant economic activity, attracting new establishments like Starbucks, Family Dollar, and Planet Fitness. Additionally, site work has begun on an Aldi grocery store, scheduled to open by the end of the year.

Mayor Broome expressed her gratitude to the Metropolitan Council and specifically acknowledged District 6 Councilman Cleve Dunn Jr. for his leadership and involvement in the area’s revitalization.

"I thank Amazon for their investment and for being a catalyst for economic growth in Baton Rouge. This partnership exemplifies what can be achieved when we work together towards a shared vision for our city's future," stated Councilman Cleve Dunn Jr.

Amazon has pledged to offer competitive wages and comprehensive benefits, with starting pay at $17.50 an hour. Employees will also have access to health care, dental care, a 401k, and paid parental leave.
