BATON ROUGE, La. — Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards is introducing a bold, multifaceted approach to public safety—one that goes beyond traditional policing. While reinstating specialized police units is part of his strategy, Edwards is emphasizing solutions that address the root causes of crime, focusing on community investment, education, and economic opportunities.

A Holistic Approach to Crime Reduction

Edwards acknowledges that law enforcement alone cannot create long-term safety and stability. His administration is developing initiatives that integrate policing with proactive community engagement and social programs designed to deter crime before it starts.

“We can’t arrest our way out of this,” Edwards said. “A safer Baton Rouge means investing in our people—creating opportunities for young people, supporting families, and providing pathways away from crime.”

Investing in Communities to Prevent Crime

Under Edwards’ leadership, Baton Rouge is prioritizing efforts that provide at-risk individuals with the support and resources needed to thrive, including:

  • Youth Outreach & Mentorship Programs – Expanding after-school initiatives, summer job opportunities, and mentorship programs to steer young people away from crime.
  • Workforce Development & Job Training – Partnering with local businesses and trade schools to provide job skills training, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities.
  • Mental Health & Social Services Expansion – Increasing access to mental health care, substance abuse treatment, and crisis intervention services.
  • Neighborhood Revitalization Efforts – Investing in infrastructure improvements, affordable housing, and local businesses to uplift struggling communities.

“These programs help prevent crime before it happens,” Edwards said. “When people have opportunities, they make better choices.”

Policing as Part of a Bigger Picture

While Edwards is reinstating specialized police units within BRPD, he insists they will operate with stricter oversight and accountability to build community trust. His administration is also pushing for expanded partnerships with social service agencies to ensure that law enforcement isn’t the only response to public safety concerns.

“We need our officers focusing on violent criminals and repeat offenders, while other professionals handle crises related to mental health, addiction, and homelessness,” Edwards explained. “We’re bringing in social workers, crisis counselors, and intervention specialists to assist where appropriate.”

Collaborating with Law Enforcement & Community Partners

To tackle crime comprehensively, BRPD is also strengthening partnerships with state and federal agencies while working closely with local organizations. Chief TJ Morse highlighted the importance of these collaborations:

“By working with community leaders, business owners, and social services, we can create lasting change,” Morse said. “We’re not just fighting crime—we’re preventing it.”

Building a Safer Baton Rouge for the Future

Mayor Edwards’ vision for public safety extends beyond immediate crime reduction. By integrating community-driven solutions with responsible policing, he aims to create a city where all residents feel safe and have access to opportunities.

“This is about more than just law enforcement,” Edwards said. “We are building a foundation for a safer, stronger Baton Rouge—one where prevention, opportunity, and community engagement are just as important as policing.”

Residents are encouraged to stay informed on upcoming initiatives as the Edwards administration continues rolling out its comprehensive public safety strategy.
