ATLANTA — The flag-draped casket of former President Jimmy Carter arrived at the Carter Presidential Library and Museum on Saturday, where he will lie in repose until Tuesday. The public is invited to pay respects to the 39th president, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100. This solemn occasion begins a series of events honoring Carter’s life and legacy, culminating in a state funeral later this week.

The motorcade began its journey in Plains, Georgia, Carter’s birthplace and lifelong home. The procession paused at key landmarks, including the Carter family farm, before arriving at the Carter Center in Atlanta. A military honor guard stood watch as Carter’s casket was placed in the library, where his decades of post-presidential advocacy for democracy, human rights, and public health are celebrated.

After the Atlanta tributes, Carter’s body will be transported to the U.S. Capitol to lie in state, followed by a Thursday funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. He will then return to Plains for burial beside his wife, Rosalynn, near their family home. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream of the tributes at the Carter Center is available on the REUTERS YouTube Channel.
