Queen Tahj Williams Breaks Barriers as First Black Woman to Design Super Bowl Logo and Theme Art
Williams’ designs will feature prominently throughout the Super Bowl LIX festivities, appearing on digital game tickets, official programs, and large-scale public displays across New Orleans.
NEW ORLEANS – Queen Tahj Williams, a 26-year-old artist rooted in the rich cultural tapestry of New Orleans, has made history as the first Black woman to design the Super Bowl logo and theme art for the NFL. Her beadwork for Super Bowl LIX celebrates the centuries-old Black Masking tradition, a cultural practice unique to the city and steeped in community and resilience.
The artist, who is a member of the Golden Eagles Tribe, drew inspiration from her heritage to create the hand-beaded logo and accompanying artwork. The intricate designs reflect the vibrant, ceremonial suits worn during Mardi Gras, showcasing the enduring legacy of the Black Masking tradition.
“This is more than an opportunity—it’s a chance to share the beauty of my culture with the world,” Williams said. “The spirit of community and determination that defines Black Masking is central to my work, and I’m honored to see it represented on such a global stage.”
Williams’ personal story intertwines with the world of football. As the only girl and captain of her middle school football team, she credits the sport with teaching her the discipline and determination that now drive her creative pursuits. “Football taught me to pursue my dreams without being limited by societal expectations,” she shared.
Her designs will feature prominently throughout the Super Bowl LIX festivities, appearing on digital game tickets, official programs, and large-scale public displays across New Orleans. The collaboration underscores the NFL’s efforts to highlight the cultural essence of the host city while celebrating Black artistry.
“From the beginning, we wanted the theme art for Super Bowl LIX to reflect the vibrant culture of New Orleans,” said Marissa Solis, the NFL’s senior vice president of global brand and consumer marketing. “Queen Tahj’s connection to her heritage and remarkable talent made her the ideal choice for this landmark project.”
As the Super Bowl approaches, Williams’ groundbreaking work is set to shine a spotlight on New Orleans’ unique traditions, elevating the Black Masking culture to new heights.
