Rep. Cleo Fields Denounces President Trump’s DEI Remarks on Fatal Plane Crash, Calls for Sensible Governance
Fields also addressed reports that a Pentagon intelligence agency is considering ending Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Black History Month, and Juneteenth observance. He called the move “unfortunate” and stressed the importance of recognizing Black history in America.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Cleo Fields (D-La.) strongly criticized Trump’s comments linking diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives to the recent deadly plane crash in Washington, D.C., calling them “totally off base” and unsupported by evidence.
Fields emphasized the need for a fact-based approach rather than political speculation.
“To jump to a conclusion and say that DEI was involved is completely baseless. There is no factual evidence whatsoever to support such an assertion,” Fields stated. “We need to focus on supporting the grieving families and allowing the National Transportation Safety Board to conduct its investigation.”
Fields Rebukes Trump’s DEI Criticism
During a recent press conference, President Trump suggested that DEI policies may have led to unqualified hires in the aviation sector, possibly contributing to the tragedy. When asked directly if race or gender played a role, Trump responded, “It may have. I don’t know.”
Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Black History Month, and Juneteenth observance
“DEI is not about elevating unqualified individuals. It ensures that everyone has an equal chance to succeed,” Fields said. “Too much energy is spent criticizing DEI instead of recognizing its role in creating fairness and unity.”
Pentagon Controversy Over Black History Observances
Fields also addressed reports that a Pentagon intelligence agency is considering ending Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Black History Month, and Juneteenth observance. He called the move “unfortunate” and stressed the importance of recognizing Black history in America.
“As a country, we must learn to coexist and respect each other’s histories,” Fields said. “DEI isn’t about favoritism; it’s about making sure qualified individuals are given fair opportunities.”
Federal Funding Freeze and Governance Concerns
Additionally, Fields criticized the Trump administration’s now-halted attempt to freeze federal funding, which a judge recently blocked.
“The president cannot unilaterally freeze money that Congress has appropriated,” Fields said, citing the 1974 Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act. “This knee-jerk reaction only created unnecessary confusion nationwide.”
While the White House press secretary indicated the administration still plans to move forward with a revised funding strategy, Fields urged the president to focus on governance rather than creating instability.
“It’s time to govern responsibly,” he stated. “People deserve clarity, not fear and uncertainty.”
Looking Ahead
With the crash investigation ongoing and funding battles looming, Fields remains committed to protecting federal programs, particularly FEMA, which he says is essential for states like Louisiana.
“FEMA is crucial for disaster-prone states like Louisiana. Instead of eliminating it, we should be improving it,” Fields emphasized.
As debates over DEI, federal funding, and disaster response continue, Fields called for leadership that fosters unity and practical solutions.
“We need leadership that brings people together,” he said. “Now is the time for real governance, not political division.”
