SHREVEPORT, La. — U.S. Representative Cleo Fields issued a dire warning Thursday at a Shreveport town hall, condemning former President Donald Trump’s governing tactics as authoritarian and labeling him a “wannabe dictator.” He also blasted Elon Musk for an unconstitutional seizure of government power. Addressing a packed audience, Fields painted a stark picture of a democracy under siege, calling on citizens to stand against executive overreach and corporate interference.

“Trump has instilled fear, particularly among federal employees,” Fields declared. “This is not how a democracy functions. We do not elect kings—we elect a president accountable to the people. Our government is built on three equal branches, and the executive branch does not hold unilateral power. But Trump governs like a dictator, ignoring these principles.”

Fields also excoriated Musk’s increasing influence over government operations, particularly through the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE.

“This country is in turmoil because power is being consolidated in the hands of the few,” Fields asserted. “The reality, as laid out by the Constitution, is that no one individual should hold unchecked authority. Many of these executive orders blatantly infringe on legislative powers and face legal challenges. Even more concerning is Elon Musk’s unauthorized access to government departments' personal and private information. This is not only unconscionable—it is unconstitutional, and it must be stopped.”

Turning to Democratic leadership, Fields voiced strong support for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

“I have no doubts about our leadership. Jeffries is a formidable, capable leader who is steering the Democratic Party with strength and conviction,” Fields said.

He also expressed grave concern over the administration’s shift in foreign policy, particularly its wavering stance on Ukraine and growing ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Ukraine is our ally, and Putin is a tyrant,” Fields warned. “History proves that when you appease aggressors, they only grow bolder. America must stand unwaveringly with Ukraine. If we fail to push back now, Putin will not stop.”

Despite policy differences, Fields described his relationship with House Speaker Mike Johnson as necessary for progress.

“My mother always said if two people agree on everything, one of them isn’t needed,” Fields said. “We have disagreements, but we work together, because unity and governance are more important than partisan divisions. Right now, with the absence of strong leadership in the executive branch, Congress must rise to the occasion.”

Fields vowed to continue hosting town halls in Shreveport frequently and will return to Washington next week to resume legislative battles.
