RNC Gears Up for Official Nomination Amid Heightened Security
The RNC will take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the Fiserv Forum. Wisconsin is a critical swing state for 2024, where President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have both campaigned this year.

Washington — The Republican National Convention (RNC) kicks off in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Monday, set to officially nominate the GOP's presidential candidate amid heightened security measures following a recent violent incident at a campaign rally.

The four-day convention, held at the Fiserv Forum, will see approximately 2,400 delegates from across the country gather to nominate former President Donald Trump in a roll call vote on Monday. This formal vote comes after Trump secured the necessary delegates in March, marking a significant milestone in the GOP's 2024 campaign.

Security at the convention has been significantly increased following an assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania. The attack, carried out by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, resulted in the death of one attendee and injuries to two others before Crooks was neutralized by a Secret Service sniper. In response, law enforcement agencies have expanded security perimeters and buffer zones around the event. A joint threat assessment from the FBI, Secret Service, and local authorities has heightened vigilance, although no specific threats have been identified.

The RNC is not just about the nomination. The convention will feature the adoption of a new Republican platform, which includes softened language on abortion, advocating for state-level decision-making on the issue, as well as proposals for a missile defense shield, tax cuts, and mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.

Milwaukee, a traditionally Democratic stronghold in the battleground state of Wisconsin, provides a strategic venue for the GOP to connect with key voters. The city was chosen after Trump narrowly won Wisconsin in 2016 but lost to President Biden in 2020.

The convention runs from Monday to Thursday, with official sessions beginning at 12:45 p.m. local time each day. The evening sessions will feature speeches from prominent GOP figures, including Tucker Carlson, Vivek Ramaswamy, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and several senators and representatives. Notably, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who endorsed Trump after dropping out of the primary, will also speak.

Trump's vice presidential pick, anticipated to be announced soon, will likely speak on Wednesday, with Trump delivering his acceptance speech on Thursday. Despite considering a delay after the assassination attempt, Trump decided to proceed as planned, arriving in Milwaukee on Sunday.

CBS News 24/7 will have coverage of the convention throughout the day and will stream each night's keynote speeches, and can also be viewed on your mobile or streaming device.
