BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University’s School of Nursing is making history as a group of its male nursing students prepares to be honored on one of the biggest stages in sports—Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
The students have been invited to the prestigious Super Bowl Breakfast, a marquee event that celebrates character, leadership, and community impact. Their attendance will spotlight Southern University’s groundbreaking efforts to diversify the nursing profession, with a special emphasis on its largest-ever cohort of more than 35 male nursing students.
“This recognition is a testament to the excellence, dedication, and professionalism demonstrated by the Men of SUSON,” said Sandra Brown, dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health. “The Super Bowl Breakfast and NFL Experience will not only provide them with invaluable networking opportunities but also allow them to showcase the legacy and impact of Southern University’s nursing program on a national scale.”
The recognition comes at a pivotal time as Southern University marks a historic milestone: enrolling its largest class of Black male nursing students. With 33 Black men currently in the program, the university is setting new benchmarks for increasing minority representation in healthcare.
As the healthcare industry continues to face shortages and strives for greater diversity, Southern University’s commitment to fostering Black male nurses stands as a beacon of progress. Their presence at Super Bowl LIX underscores their achievements and reinforces the critical role they will play in shaping the future of healthcare.
