WASHINGTON — House Democrats have strongly opposed a Republican-backed budget proposal, warning that the plan would result in historic cuts to Medicaid and severely impact vulnerable groups, including children, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and families across the nation.

During a press conference this week, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., called the Republican budget a dangerous step that would undermine essential public services. "The Republican budget will set in motion the largest cut to Medicaid in American history," Jeffries said. "Children will be hurt. Families will be hurt. Seniors will be hurt. Everyday Americans with disabilities will be hurt. Hospitals and nursing homes will be hurt all across America."

Democratic leaders emphasized that the proposed budget could lead to a reduction in funding for critical services such as nursing home care, medical support for people with disabilities, and nutritional assistance programs. They voiced strong opposition to what they described as a "reckless" fiscal plan that prioritizes tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of the nation’s most vulnerable populations.

Republicans, in turn, have defended their proposal, introducing initiatives such as the Drain the Swamp Act and the Cuts Act, which they argue are aimed at reducing wasteful government spending. When asked whether Democrats would support any efforts to reduce government waste, Jeffries acknowledged the party's willingness to address waste, fraud, and abuse but dismissed the GOP’s proposals as politically motivated and detrimental to social safety nets.

In his remarks, Jeffries also linked the Republican budget proposals to Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, accusing them of attempting to gain access to private taxpayer data while benefiting from government contracts. "Elon Musk does not need access to the names, addresses, Social Security numbers, birth dates, and bank account information of the American people," Jeffries said, urging lawmakers to continue legal efforts to block such attempts.

As budget negotiations intensify ahead of a critical spending deadline in March, Jeffries reiterated his party’s stance on protecting key entitlement programs, saying, "Hands off Social Security. Hands off Medicare. Hands off Medicaid."

Despite the opposition from House Democrats, Republicans, who control the majority in the chamber, have yet to revise their proposed budget. Bipartisan discussions continue as both parties work toward a resolution on federal spending.
