BATON ROUGE, La. — Governor Jeff Landry has appointed Tony Clayton, District Attorney for Louisiana’s 18th Judicial District, as the next Chair of the Southern University System Board of Supervisors. Clayton’s term will begin on January 1, 2025.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, November 27. Governor Landry emphasized Clayton’s qualifications, citing his dedication to education and deep ties to Southern University as a graduate.

“I have known Tony for a long time, and there is no one better suited for this position,” Landry said. “As a proud alumnus, he understands the steps necessary to elevate the University’s educational standards and equip students for the workforce. I look forward to the impact of his leadership.”

Clayton's judicial district encompasses the parishes of Iberville, West Baton Rouge, and Pointe Coupee. He expressed his commitment to advancing the University’s mission.

“Governor Landry is serious about education and raising Louisiana’s standards,” Clayton said. “I am ready to execute this vision and work to enhance Southern University’s educational and workforce development initiatives.”

Clayton’s appointment signals a continued focus on strengthening the University’s role in shaping future leaders and fostering workforce readiness across Louisiana.
