University Lakes Restoration: A Healthier Future for Baton Rouge’s Iconic Waterways
BATON ROUGE — The University Lakes restoration project is reshaping some of Baton Rouge's most treasured landmarks, with work on City Park Lake and Lake Erie already showing visible improvements.
An open house held by the project team provided residents with updates on the initiative’s progress and plans for the coming year. The restoration effort, which began with dredging City Park Lake and Lake Erie during phase one, has focused on improving water quality, enhancing wildlife habitats, and restoring the lakes’ ecological balance.
Next year, the project will enter phase 2A, which includes deepening College Lake and the northern portion of University Lake. Additional upgrades to infrastructure, such as improvements to May Street, are set to follow.
Project Manager Mark Goodson highlighted the positive impact already visible in the dredged lakes.
“Those that have been dredged look so much healthier,” Goodson said. “If you compare them to how they looked a year or two ago, the transformation is remarkable.”
The restoration process has not been without challenges, as construction has caused temporary disruptions for area residents. However, Goodson is optimistic that the long-term benefits will outweigh the inconveniences.
“Seeing a healthy lake system is exciting. It’s not just about aesthetics but creating a sustainable environment for future generations,” Goodson said.
The entire restoration project is on track to be completed by December 2026, bringing long-lasting benefits to the community and its cherished lakes.
