Local High School Students Gain Hands-On Health Care Experience

ZACHARY, La. — Lane Regional Medical Center, in collaboration with the Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC), is launching a summer health careers volunteer program for local high school students. The “A-HEC of a Summer” initiative is designed for ninth, 10th, and 11th-graders with a minimum GPA of 2.0 interested in pursuing careers in health care.

Eight students from Zachary High, Baker High, Central High School, and Central Private School will participate in the program. These students will rotate through various hospital departments and shadow healthcare professionals, gaining invaluable insight into the medical field.

Throughout the three-week program at Lane Regional Medical Center, participants will obtain first-hand knowledge about different healthcare fields and issues. According to a news release, they will also practice basic patient care skills and attain CPR certification.

The program aims to inspire and educate the next generation of healthcare professionals by providing them with practical experience and exposure to the day-to-day operations of a hospital.
